Preston took the lead for good on Ashley Teets' 2:25 third leg. With Kaylyn Christopher running the anchor, things were well in hand. The only question was whether or not they'd set the record. They did. They got it by less than a second, but they did get it. Preston's 9:36.53 is the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Morgantown was easily 2nd place. Their time of 9:44.87 is the 8th Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 7th Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance. Hurricane held off University by just 0.27 seconds to take 3rd. Ripley got past Cabell Midland on the final leg to take 5th.

Shot Put
Cabell Midland's Ashley Morrow won the shot put yet again, this time by just 2.5 inches over Hurricane's Christy Austin. Preston's Elsie Smith was less than a foot back in 3rd. She was over 2 feet ahead of 4th place finisher Ashley Heavener of Hampshire. She was over a foot ahead of Cabell Midland's Tara Johnson. Capital's Shimaya Jones took the final spot.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Wheeling Park took home the title by over a second after 2nd and 3rd place finishers Parkersburg South and Parkersburg were disqualified for early exchanges. Hedgesville edged Hurricane by just over a tenth of a second for 2nd. John Marshall was just 0.26 back in 4th. Cabell Midland took home 5th, and Greenbrier East claimed the final spot.

Discus
Capital's Shannon Hooper took the event by nearly 2 feet. Hurricane's Christy Austin was over 5 feet ahead of the rest of the field by 5 feet. Parkersburg's Kim Dent was over 2 feet ahead of the next competitor. Bridgeport's Arielle Stafford was the only other thrower over 110' in taking 4th. Hampshire's Ashley Heavener was just 4 inches ahead of Buckhannon-Upshur's Susie Godwin for 5th.

3200 Meter Run
This was a very good race. After 3 laps, there were 8 people still in the front pack as they went through from 4:06 to 4:08. At the 1600 Meter mark, there were still 7 in the pack, all crossing between 5:31 and 5:32. The pack shrunk to four by the end of lap five. Included were Preston's Jordan Hamric, Ashley Teets, and Ari Kasprowicz and University's Hallie Portner. On lap 6, Hamric, Teets, and Portner pulled away. On lap 7, the Preston pair asserted themselves, picking up the pace, and Portner was unable to match. Hamric hammered the last lap in 1:18 to take the win in 11:01.49. Hamric's time is the 4th Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 2nd Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Teets easily held 2nd, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Jefferson's Brooke Boening who used a 1:24 last lap to just pull past Portner for 3rd. Teets' time of 11:09.37 is tied for 7th Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and tied for the 5th Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Peformance and the 3rd Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Morgantown's Emma Berry easily held the 5th position, 6 seconds behind Portner, but 9 seconds ahead of everyone else. Hurricane's Alex Dent used a strong finish to squeeze into 6th place.

Long Jump
Buckhannon-Upshur's Chelsea Carrier won her first event of the weekend in Record-Breaking fashion, setting a new State Mark with her leap of 18'8.50. That put her over a foot ahead of the rest of the field. That leap also stands as the Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Huntington's Laquita Wilburn was over a foot ahead of everyone else and was the only other competitor over 17'. George Washington's Brittany Pratt scored 3rd by just over 2 inches over Parkersburg's Meghan Ruddlesden who was just 1/2 inch further than Cabell Midland's Robin Rogers. Ripley's Adrienne Roark claimed the final spot.

Hurricane's Josie Crouch pulled away in the last 100 Meters to take the title convincingly. Nitro's Jennifer Cooperrider slipped past Cabell Midland's Danielle Winningham for 2nd. John Marshall's Julie Young surged past Musselman's Alaina Pletcher for 4th. Spring Valley's Savannah Rutherford grabbed the final position from the 1st heat.

1600 Meter Run
The showdown between Preston's Kaylyn Christopher and University's Amber Riley was just that. Christopher led throughout, but Riley was close on her heels well into the 3rd lap before Christopher started generating a gap. Christopher pulled away to take the event by over 2 seconds as the pair became the first to go under 5:00 at the State Meet. Christopher's 4:55.85 is the Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the Best Class AAA All-Time State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Riley's 4:58.01 is the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 2nd Best Class AAA All-Time State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Preston's Jordan Hamric made up a 7 second deficit on the last lap to take 3rd. Wheeling Park's Courtney Yaeger led most of the first two laps before settling for 4th. University's Hallie Portner outkicked Preston's Ari Kasprowicz for 5th. The first 9 girls all came in under 5:30.

Buckhannon-Upshur's Chelsea Carrier just missed beating her record set a year ago in winning by well over a second. Carrier's time of 44.61 is the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 2nd Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class AAA Performance this decade. John Marshall's Julie Young surged past the Hampshire duo of Samantha Jendras and Jeanne Jendras. Parkersburg's Kathy Dent claimed 5th, and George Washington's Bailey Rhodes grabbed the final position.

Bridgeport's Kendall McCaugherty soared over 5'9 to set a new State Record and win the event by 7 inches. Her 5'9 is the Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Of the remaining competitors, only Elkins' Megan Warner was able to clear 5'2. Five other jumpers cleared 5'0 with Capital's Brittany Cox taking third. Hampshire's Brittany Wolford and Robert C. Byrd's Lauren DeMarco tied for 4th, and Parkersburg South's Jessica Gilkeson finished 6th.

Buckhannon-Upshur's Chelsea Carrier made it three-for-three in the 100 Highs. She set a new Meet Record in the trials and took the finals by over 0.6 seconds. Carrier's Trials Time of 14.66 and finals time of 14.83 are the 1st and 4th Best All-Time State Meet Performances Regardless of Class and the 1st and 4th Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performances and the 1st and 3rd Best Class AAA times this decade. Huntington's Laquita Wilburn was solidly in 2nd. Parkersburg South's Kelsey Watkins just edged past Parkersburg's Kathy Dent for 3rd. Hedgesville's Katie Rude and Martinsburg's Iesha Robinson led a tight three-way race for the final two spots.

Jefferson's Brittany Carr outleaned Fairmont Senior's Valerie Jasper who tumbled hard to the track after crossing the finish line. Only 0.01 separated the two. Buckhannon-Upshur's Marissa Wright edged past South Charleston's Nicole Hill for 3rd. Huntington's Laquita Wilburn scored a 5th place finish. Jefferson's Chelsea Flinchum snagged the final spot by just 0.01.

Pole Vault
Robert C. Byrd's Lauren DeMarco was the only competitor to clear the bar at 10' giving her the outright title. Parkersburg South's Tara Collins and Parkersburg's Caitlin Meeks each cleared 9'6 to take 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Three other girls cleared 9'0. George Washington's Brittany Pratt, Hurricane's Megan Loughry, and John Marshall's Jami Fonner took the final three places in that order.

Jefferson pulled off a come from behind win behind the anchor leg of Brittany Carr, taking the event by less than half a second over Morgantown. Wheeling Park outdueled Parkersburg for 3rd. There was over a 1.5 second gap between 4th and 5th. Capital edged out Buckhannon-Upshur for 5th place. Pre-meet favorite Huntington was disqualified on a bad exchange.

4x100 Meter Relay
Wheeling Park matched Jefferson's come from behind win in the 4x200 with one of their own in the 4x100 behind the anchor leg of Austyn Creighton to win the event by just 0.09. Wheeling Park's 50.34 is tied for the 4th Best Class AAA Time this decade. Jefferson was easily 2nd in the event. Jefferson's 50.43 is the 6th Best Class AAA Time this decade. Parkersburg and Fairmont Senior battled to matching times in the 1st heat, with Parkersburg taking 3rd overall and Fairmont Senior taking 4th. Morgantown was just 0.06 off their times in taking 5th. Musselman rounded out the scoring.

Preston's Kaylyn Christopher shattered the meet record by over 2 seconds but came up just short of setting the All-Time mark held by Jennifer Povick. Christopher's time of 2:13.67 is the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA performance this decade. University's Amber Riley also beat the old meet record in taking 2nd. Her time of 2:15.51 is the 3rd Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 2nd Best Class AAA State Meet Performance and the 2nd Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Morgantown's Monica Chase was about 3 seconds back in 3rd. Chase's time of 2:18.50 is the 5th Best Class AAA Performance this decade. Nitro's Jennifer Cooperrider also ran under 2:20 in taking 4th. The Hurricane pair of Josie Crouch and Jordan Starcher just edged out Wheeling Park's Courtney Yaeger for the final two spots.

Buckhannon-Upshur's Chelsea Carrier again made it a 40-point weekend by taking the 200 Meter Dash in 25.05. She finished over 0.6 seconds ahead of the field. Carrier's 25.05 was the 5th Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 5th Best Class AAA All-Time State Meet Performance and the 3rd Best This Decade. Nicholas' Amber Adkins and Musselman's Alaina Pletcher were the only other two girls to go under 26 seconds in taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Buckhannon-Upshur's Marissa Wright solidly held 4th. South Charleston's Nicole Hill was solidly in 5th, and Parkersburg's Janey Hall squeezed into 6th by just 0.07.

The team standings came down to the 4x400. Preston could win the meet by placing 5th or higher. Buckhannon-Upshur could win the meet by winning the event and having Preston not place. They could tie if Buckhannon-Upshur won the event, and Preston took 6th. Cabell Midland used a strong anchor leg by Danielle Winningham to take first place from Buckhannon-Upshur. I believe this crew of Winningham, Ashley Hewett, Taylor Cassidy, and Rebecca Thomas also won the event last year. Morgantown edged Hampshire by just 0.01 for 3rd. Hurricane held off Preston to take 5th. Preston's 6th place finish along with Buckhannon-Upshur's 2nd place finish gave Preston the team title by a mere two points.

Bridgeport's Ben Griffith took home the final position by less than 3 inches.

Wheeling Park has the lead heading into the anchor leg, and with Andy Goldbaugh on anchor things were well in hand. Their 56.88 is the 2nd Best Class AAA time this decade. Park took the win by over 0.8 seconds ahead of Robert C. Byrd. St. Albans was another 0.34 back in 3rd. Cabell Midland was 0.25 behind St. Albans. East Fairmont was over a second back in 5th. Hedgesville rounded out the scoring.

Martinsburg's Matt Porter was the furthest of only two throwers who surpassed 140'. Parkersburg's Brandon Flint was the other in taking 2nd. Riverside's Raheem Waiters just missed the mark in taking 3rd. Wheeling Park's Ricky Hunt and Buckhannon-Upshur's Ryan Godwin had matching top throws, but Hunt had a better 2nd best throw to take the 4th position. Parkersburg's Justin Adkins was the final placer.

Bridgeport's Wes Eades won a very tight long jump competition that saw the top 4 separated by less than 4 inches. Eades took the top spot by 3/4 inch over Hedgesville's Robin Dean. Dean took 2nd by just 1.75 inches over Robert C. Byrd's Jordan Swiger. Swiger took 3rd by just 3/4 inch over Wheeling Park's Brandon McKinley. Cabell Midland's Ryan Ramsey edged George Washington's Chase Smith by 3/4 inch for 5th.

3200 Meter Run
Wheeling Park's Ryan Beabout took out hard, going through the first lap in 1:05. After two laps, he held a 6 second lead over the next competitor. After three laps, the lead was 10 seconds, and the pack that followed was at least 7 deep. At four laps, the lead was 12 seconds as Beabout crossed the marker in 4:39. A pack of 7 still followed. On lap five, the lead dwindled to 10 seconds. and five members of the chase pack had started to separate: University's Eric Frohnapfel, Preston's Josh Feather, Elkins' Alex Zurbuch, North Marion's Zach Tennant, and Parkersburg South's Brian Blanc. After six laps, the lead remained at 10 seconds, and the same five still followed. On lap 7, Feather started to make a move. Beabout still led by 7 seconds, but Feather had generated a 5 second gap on the rest of the field. At the finish, Beabout still took the tape without being challenged, but Feather did close to within less than 6 seconds. Beabout's time of 9:30.89 is the 6th Best Class AAA time this decade. Frohnapfel pulled away to 3rd ahead of Zurbuch. Tennant held onto fifth, and Jefferson's Cory Hampshire fought his was into 6th place. The first 7 came in under 10:00.

Jefferson's Dewey McDonald and Cabell Midland's Daniel Jarrell each cleared 6'4 with McDonald taking the top spot on tie-breakers. St. Albans' Trevor Wilburn, John Marshall's Matt Deel, and Parkersburg South's Todd Offenberger each cleared 6'2 in taking 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively. The field took out fast, with the leaders crossing in 1:04. There was still a pack at two laps as the leaders crossed in 2:13. The pack crossed the third lap in 3:20 with at least three still in contention. Down the stretch Preston's Josh Feather pulled away from Wheeling Park's Ryan Beabout to defend his title from a year ago. Feather's 4:24.68 is the 6th Best Class AAA time this decade. University's Eric Frohnapfel won a tight battle to the finish over George Washington's Adam Woodruff and Hampshire's John Paul Binotto as the front five all came in under 4:29. North Marion's Zach Tennant claimed the final spot.

Pole Vault
St. Albans' Aaron Dunlap was the only vaulter to clear 13'6. Four other vaulters cleared 13'0 with misses determining the places. Parkersburg South's Travis Townsend took 2nd. Bridgeport's Nathan Schwenk took 3rd. Hedgesville's Will Roberts took 4th, and Bridgeport's Erik Green took 5th. Parkersburg's Scott McMillan cleared 12'6 and took the final position on misses.

Buckhannon-Upshur's Andrew Carrier used his 400 Meter strength to pull away down the stretch and cross the line in under 38 seconds. His 37.96 is the 9th Best All-Time State Meet Performance Regardless of Class and the 9th Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance and the Best Class AAA Time this decade. Wheeling Park's Andy Goldbaugh held steady into 2nd ahead of Robert C. Byrd's Dwight Holden. Goldbaugh's 38.32 is the 2nd Best Class AAA time this decade. There was over a 1 second gap back to the next finisher. John Marshall's Mark Sampson beat out Wheeling Park's Geoffrey Hempelmann for 4th. Robert C. Byrd's Eddie Aspy took the final position by 0.08.
